Pringle studied and practised painting on a part-time basis while he ran an optician’s business in Glasgow. He painted this work when he was living in Gartcosh, a village located to the east of the city. He used small, distinct brushstrokes of colour that blend together when seen from a distance. This technique shows his awareness of post-impressionist art. In this way, there are parallels between Pringle and some of his London-based artists like Spencer Gore.
